The Trinidad & Tobago International 2023 Soca Monarch competition has been officially cancelled because of a lack of finances.
This year’s event would’ve been the first since 2020.
Directors of the Caribbean Prestige Foundation, the body behind the event, Geoffrey Wharton – Lake, and Ricky Ragoonanan said it was a tough decision to make.
Despite the legacy and popularity of the event, Ragoonanan said that the money offered to them by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago was not enough to finance prizes and execute the event.
Wharton – Lake said they can no longer carry the burden of the event.
The competition was founded by William Monroe in 1993 and has morphed into an international event, a staple on the Carnival calendar.
Grenada’s own Hollice Mapp became the first non-national to win the Power Soca crown in 2019 with his massive hit, Run Wid It.
Meanwhile, Grenada’s Nicole Francis James, stage name ‘Pinky Fabulous’ performances during Spicemas 2022, captivated the Roy Cape All-Stars Band of Trinidad and Tobago.
So much so, that iconic musician Roy Cape invited her to participate in several shows in Trinidad’s Carnival.
After contemplating whether or not she should leave her family Nicole Francis James left Grenada on Saturday, January 14, for neighboring Trinidad & Tobago.
Pinky has been making a few appearances in several shows during the week.
