In an effort to ensure increased safety on the roads of grenada the traffic department with the aid of Donnel Mitchell in the ministry of infrastructure have been installing solar powered reflectors on speed bumps along the roads going from the ridged panel building in St. David to woodlands, River road, Beausejour and on to Gouyave.
GBN contacted superintendent in charge of the traffic department, randy Connaught, who said the lights were sourced by the police department and have been installed taking into consideration the height of the humps and the need for enhanced visibility for drivers at night.
The feedback received has been positive thus far from some drivers.
Superintendant Connaught said this is a pilot project, one that will be assessed and re-strategized so that all major speed bumps around the island can be equipped with the lights.
The traffic department is aware that some lights have already been broken as a result of tire pressure. They intend to procure sturdier lights that can withstand the weight of vehicles to ensure that the benefits to drivers are long-term.
With 31 minor accidents and 1 major accident recorded in just the first 3 days of the New Year, the traffic department hopes that this new project will contribute to increased road safety island wide.
