When the government of Grenada requested the deferral of the public officers’ 4% salary increase, the public workers union was willing to accept on the basis that the contracted members of the union were appointed to permanent positions.

President of the public workers union Rachel Roberts said more than half of the unions’ members are contracted. She said the union views this as proof of discrimination…

Roberts said the government has violated the labor code and now has to create positions to accommodate workers within the public service…

Permanent secretary in the ministry of education Kevin Andall who was also a guest on the program said the issue of regularization is being addressed.

Government’s position was further backed by permanent secretary with responsibility for public administration Rhonda Jones said the government has been taking active steps to address the issue of regularization.

She said, presently, there aren’t sufficient positions available to do so for all contracted employees…

The public workers union, upon noting the government’s inability to meet their conditions, has joined the Grenada union of teachers in refusing the governments deferral request altogether.
