The Proud of My Heritage project facilitated the education and display of culture by primary schools in Carriacou & Petite Martinique at the Independence Cultural Evening last Wednesday at the Hillsborough Botanical Gardens.

The Proud of My Heritage project aims to record, protect and safeguard most of the Intangible Cultural Heritage elements of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique that are under threat of disappearing and unknown to nationals, especially younger generations.

The students of the Mt. Pleasant, Dover and Hillsborough government schools engaged in several activities including boat building Shakespeare Mas’ and string band music.

Stacy Bedeau (pronounced bee-doh), a Teacher at the Dover Government School says it was a learning experience for the students, who portrayed an element of boat building, and launching by re-enacting a poem written by a past teacher of the school.

The month of February has been designated Heritage Month.

The project is an initiative of the Grenada National Trust, funded by UNESCO for the Transmission and Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Grenada through inventorying and education initiatives.
