Minister of Agriculture Peter David explains that government is banking on the interest Grenadians have shown in farming following the covid-19 pandemic, as they embark on the pilot agricultural land bank project.

The launch of the pilot project will commence in the coming weeks and aims at ensuring the unavailability of farm land is not a hindrance for potential farmers.

The challenges have been the availability of farm land and operating agriculture as a business which Minister David says will be addressed under the project.

The minister notes that the estates will be divided into plots to be applied for then the applicants will be trained in business management before being granted a license or lease.

Chief Agricultural Officer Trevor Thompson adds that the project is being piloted in three Caribbean countries where they are targeting the inclusion of private land owners in the land bank.

Minister David says the Grand Bacolet land bank will be launched first next month, where the ministry will provide all the necessary support to farmers already on the estate and those coming in to farm.
