The Grenada Human Rights Organisation (GHRO) Incorporated says it stands in solidarity with the members of the Grenada Bar Association (GBA) for its call on Government to provide suitable facilities to collectively accommodate all high courts and ancillary services.
The GBA noted in a press statement last week that the lack of adequate facilities “is increasing the backlog of cases and the ability of litigants to access justice and in some cases, liberty”
Last year on International Human Rights Day, the GHRO said access to Justice is one of the four human rights concerns raised by the organisation in its 2018 report on human rights in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
The GHRO said as an activist movement committed to educating the Grenadian society about their guaranteed rights and the obligations of government, it calls for a speedy end to this crisis.
It added that access to justice is a right must be respected.
The GBA said it is unacceptable to have the High Court facilities in such deplorable conditions, fifteen years after hurricane Ivan.
It said “The authorities have not demonstrated with sufficient urgency and action that they can accept that there is such a crisis, that they intend to deal with this crisis once and for all and how they intend to do so”.
According to the statement, the GBA noted that “All these facts point to a crisis in the entire judicial system which threatens public confidence in this system, public order, good governance and the economic and social life of the country”.
