Over sixty percent of people incarcerated return to prison.
That’s according to prison commissioner John Mitchell.
Mitchell was at the time addressing a function at Her Majesty’s Prison on Friday, February 1st.
According to statistics, over the last ten years, 470 persons were incarcerated at Her Majesty’s Prison.
Of that number, six out of ten have returned at least on one occasion, representing a sixty percent rate of re-offenders.
The Prison Commissioner says this means that there is a need to re-look the legal system.
As to whether or not rehabilitation is working, Mitchell says of this they can boast.
He told the gathering at least 80 percent of people who participate in the Prison’s rehabilitation programmes do not become repeat offenders.
However the programmes primarily cater to young prisoners and not necessarily the older seasoned inmates.
